Summer 2009

Jalama Beach Sept '09 - Boulder Surf Club

Aloha. From September 4-7, 2009, 20 students from the University of Colorado's Boulder Surf Club embarked their second "Surf and Service" trip. As sponsored surfers for our good action as opposed to our Coloradoesque top turns, we consider it proper surf etiquette to leave a positive vibration on the communities we surf near. Instead of partying with the rest of CU, these students flew to CA for dawn patrol surf sessions and to complete numerous projects in honor of the horses whom were rescued from slaughter by our hosts, Return to Freedom Ranch. Surf: Jalama Beach, CA Service: Return to Freedom, 300 acre wild horse sanctuary and conservancy Environment: All Ventura, CA local and organic fruits, vegetables. 15 lbs. fresh Santa Barbara fish. Recycling/compost/landfill stations, Biodegradable Surf Wax Thank you to our sponsors: Surfclass, Return to Freedom Ranch, Surftech, Russell Hoyte, Pierpont Produce, Firestone Walker Brewing Company, Honest Tea.

NEXT BEST:
Ventura, California. Close to Rincon, one of California's best point breaks, along with stellar surfing at Emma Wood and Solimar-just far enough from Los Angeles and close enough to Santa Barbara. It's a great place to meet on beautiful uncrowded beaches. There is a great local vibe in the water with everyone sharing the stoke. Ventura hosted the first prize-money surfing contest (in 1965), and it was here that three-time world champ Tom Curren and the "phun hog/tube junkies" Malloy brothers perfected their moves. Ventura's cool old downtown-wedged up against the foothills a few blocks from the Pacific-is packed with eateries, thrift shops, and bookstores.
