THE PROJECT: Soldiers & Surfers 2nd Annual Surf Camp - August 10,11,12 - Camp Pendleton

THE IDEA: After the tragic revelations at Walter Reed, the politics of the Iraqi conflict and the conflicting points of view are put aside. A band of surfers shares the ocean with a band of  20 soldiers from hospitals in San Diego, Washington and Texas. The three day event will take place August 10, 11 and 12 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at Camp Pendleton near Oceanside, CA.

THE TEAM: Among us are a number of former world champion surfers including Shaun Tomson, a retired U.S. Marine Corps colonel and an executive at Warner Bros. Billabong is a sponsor, as are Chipotle and Stewart Surfboards.

WHAT'S NEEDED: Food and beverage sponsors, cash donations for volunteer accommodations and insurance, on the ground bodies and support. Contact: Tom Tapp 213-840-4381 thomaswtapp@gmail.com

NEXT BEST:
Ventura, California. Close to Rincon, one of California's best point breaks, along with stellar surfing at Emma Wood and Solimar-just far enough from Los Angeles and close enough to Santa Barbara. It's a great place to meet on beautiful uncrowded beaches. There is a great local vibe in the water with everyone sharing the stoke. Ventura hosted the first prize-money surfing contest (in 1965), and it was here that three-time world champ Tom Curren and the "phun hog/tube junkies" Malloy brothers perfected their moves. Ventura's cool old downtown-wedged up against the foothills a few blocks from the Pacific-is packed with eateries, thrift shops, and bookstores.
